A HISTORY OF COLOR THROUGH ILLUSTRATED MAGAZINES (1890s-1950s)

Objectif

Notoriously dependent on context and individual perception, color is as messy as it is essential to everyday experience. Toward the end of the nineteenth century, color became a central tool in magazines for channeling attention and molding perception. Despite its centrality to the appearance and functioning of magazines, printed color has been largely overlooked by research. COPRINTS shows how studying color in periodicals can open radically new, hitherto unexplored pathways shedding light on the formation of consumerist desires, anxieties, including racial bias and aesthetic tastes through print.

Relying on a novel methodology that accounts for changing sociocultural, political and historical meanings, material constraints and affective reactions ensconced in color, COPRINTS establishes a first chromohistory of serial print, mapping how color in the magazines functioned as a determining aesthetic, symbolic and structuring entity: a central component of magazine attractivity, color gave form to fashions and tastes, bridging the worlds of art and popular culture and informing biases (especially in representations of political enemies and non-European contexts and people).

COPRINTS begins in the 1890s, when color became commonplace in the magazines and continues until the 1950s, when drawings were superseded by photographs and magazines began ceding their position of visual dominance to other media. It establishes a dialogue between two major European publishing contexts (French and German) and three smaller ones (Belgian, Italian and Spanish). The global outreach of COPRINTS methodology and history of color in the magazines is reinforced through regular workshops to ensure interaction with other European and transatlantic print cultures. By uncovering how affects and aesthetics were mediated through color, this color history offers a long overdue counterpoint emphasizing the material specificities of periodicals often obscured by their vast digitization.
