Objective
The recent resolution of the two-decade-old Nisan-Ronen conjecture
has inaugurated a new, post-Nisan-Ronen era in Algorithmic Mechanism
Design (AMD). This project seizes this opportunity to address the
fundamental question that now defines the field's frontier: What are
the principles for designing robust, predictable, and efficient
algorithms for strategic environments?
This proposal attacks this central question through a unified,
three-pronged research program. First, the project will address the
central open questions concerning the power and limits of randomized
and fractional mechanisms, extending the successful techniques from
the conjecture's resolution to this new domain. Second, it will
establish a foundational theory of Algorithmic Regularity, a
quantitative, metric-based framework that connects monotonicity and
mechanism design with disparate notions of stability from across
computer science and provides a new, prescriptive lens for designing
predictable and fair algorithms. Third, it will apply these
foundational principles to the economically significant frontier of
public blockchains, developing novel mechanisms for resource
allocation and pioneering a new, regularity-based approach to the
critical challenge of composable security for smart contracts.
By systematically charting the limits of truthfulness, building a new
theory for robust algorithm design, and providing a principled
foundation for securing decentralized economies, this research has the
potential for transformative impact. It aims not only to solve
long-standing open problems but to shape the intellectual agenda for
the next decade of research in algorithmic design for strategic
environments.
