Objective
GEOSPIN aims to improve the modelling of Earth’s orientation in space through the development of a new, physically consistent model that meets the stringent precision requirements of modern geoscience and space-based applications. Accurate knowledge of Earth’s orientation is essential for positioning, satellite navigation, space missions, and Earth observation. However, the current international standard, IAU2000A, no longer provides the millimetre-level accuracy required by geodesy, geophysics, astronomy, and related fields.
Earth’s orientation variations are driven by the periodic motion of its SPIN axis in space, known as nutation. This motion is driven by luni-solar and planetary gravitational forces and shaped by complex couplings among internal and external GEOphysical processes—including core dynamics, mantle deformation, core mode resonance, and atmosphere and ocean contributions. GEOSPIN will address these challenges by combining innovative theoretical advances with high-accuracy observational data—such as Very Long Baseline Interferometry (VLBI) and celestial body motions—to construct a unified model accounting for both forced and free nutation components. The project focuses on five major research areas: comprehensive modelling of gravitational forcing, influence of Earth’s fluid core and solid-Earth deformation, contributions from atmospheric and oceanic dynamics, understanding resonance phenomena within Earth’s interior, and integration of all contributions into a coherent, physically rigorous, ultra-precise model surpassing IAU2000A.
GEOSPIN’s results will directly support international geodetic and astronomical infrastructures, improving scientific interpretation of both Earth-based observation of space and space-based observation of Earth. The proposed model will be submitted as a successor to IAU2000A, with anticipated adoption by organisations such as the IAU, IUGG, IAG, and IERS, delivering long-term scientific and operational benefits.

Net EU financial contribution. The sum of money that the participant receives, deducted by the EU contribution to its linked third party. It considers the distribution of the EU financial contribution between direct beneficiaries of the project and other types of participants, like third-party participants.
