Objective
"Our understanding of how cities in Western and Northern Europe have been planned, designed, and constructed is skewed by the all-too-great emphasis placed on state and market interventions as successive or simultaneous drivers of urban development. The key role that collective actors of the so-called “third sector”—including cooperatives, mutual aid societies, and associations—have played as commissioners, designers, developers or constructors of important buildings and neighbourhoods in the Western and Northern European city (1890–1990) has been poorly addressed in canonical architectural histories of twentieth-century urbanism. As a result, we know little about the agency of collective actors of the third sector in European urban development.
To address this significant historiographic blind spot, this research sets out—for the first time—to establish the foundations for an alternative architectural historiography of urban development in Western and Northern Europe between 1890 and 1990 through the lens of the ""third sector”. The project argues that third sector actors co-produced the city following alternative values and collectivist agendas focused on the shared provision, usage, and maintenance of built resources, resulting in housing (e.g collective housing estates, co-housing) and civic structures (e.g people’s palaces, cultural centres) which complemented and reciprocally influenced the urban spaces that were produced by the state and the market.
By foregrounding the deeply embedded role of third-sector actors in shaping urban environments across Western and Northern Europe, this project opens new avenues for comparative research into similar urban dynamics in other geopolitical contexts. Both thematically and methodologically, this research will pave the way for future scholarship on urbanism and urban development throughout Europe, encouraging a broader reexamination of how collective, non-state and non-market actors contribute to the making of cities."
