Objective
Over the past decade, the SCION next-generation Internet has seen a continuous increase in deployment and use -- with over 20 ISPs offering SCION connectivity today. SCION is providing the communication backbone for multiple critical infrastructures in Switzerland (finance, healthcare, utilities, point-of-sale terminals), and is on the verge to be used for critical infrastructures across Europe and beyond.
Besides strong security guarantees against diverse network-based attacks, SCION provides multipath connectivity. An exciting observation from the deployed network is the large number of diverse path options: on the SCION commercial network, we observe dozens of different end-to-end paths between domains, in many cases even exceeding 100 different paths!
Such path-aware networking paradigms with profuse multipath options raise an exciting research question: can we significantly enhance the quality of public SCION Internet connectivity by collecting, predicting, and disseminating network link characteristics?
To explore this question, we propose to develop SOPHIA, an information plane to power next-generation networking. SOPHIA will provide systems and approaches for information collection, dissemination, and path optimisation on path-based networks. Leveraging SCIONS's massive multipath connectivity, applications can perform path selection with multi-criteria optimization, where the criteria can also dynamically change with an application's evolving requirements.
With SOPHIA, critical infrastructures can optimize paths for security and reliability, striving to deliver important messages before deadlines; video streaming demands high bandwidth for large data transfer, while online games mandate low-latency, low-jitter transmission for real-time player interactions.
With the algorithms and systems developed in SOPHIA, SCION can provide premium connectivity for today's
applications and provide the flexibility to satisfy the requirements of future applications.

Net EU financial contribution. The sum of money that the participant receives, deducted by the EU contribution to its linked third party. It considers the distribution of the EU financial contribution between direct beneficiaries of the project and other types of participants, like third-party participants.
