Objective
This project investigates how the decline and disappearance of occupations shape political behavior in democracies. Occupations are not only bundles of tasks; they are also associated with specific titles and social identities. Their death therefore threatens people’s self-worth as well as their economic security. Yet the political consequences of dying occupations remain poorly understood.
The project develops new concepts and tools to explain how dying occupations influence political participation, political opinions, and party choices. It analyzes four countries—Germany, Sweden, the United Kingdom, and the United States—over more than a century.
Part I maps the decline and disappearance of occupations since the late nineteenth century. Parts II–IV examine their political effects at the dawn of democracy, in the postwar decades, and in the contemporary era of automation and artificial intelligence. Part V synthesizes the findings, establishing a new research agenda on labor markets and democratic politics.
