Innovative Technologies for Massive Renewables Integration into The Grid

Objective

Europe aims to become climate-neutral by 2050 under the European Green Deal, with legally binding 2030 targets of a 55% cut in greenhouse gas emissions and at least 42.5% renewable energy (aspiring to 45%). Towards this direction, the EU policies like the Clean Energy for All Europeans Package and the revised TEN-E Regulation are prescribing major integration of variable renewable energy into electricity grids, which can be enabled by the modernization of energy markets and the prioritization of renewable generation, storage and grid infrastructure. However, Europe’s electricity grids face major technical challenges in adapting to high shares of variable renewables. Built for centralized generation, many grids struggle with the volatility of distributed solar and wind, requiring upgraded control systems and flexible resource integration. Recent incidents — the 2025 Iberian Peninsula blackout and North Macedonia’s power system disturbance — revealed weaknesses in wide-area monitoring, real-time coordination, and voltage stability. These events highlight the urgent need for advanced tools enabling wide-area situational awareness, AI-based forecasting, and improved TSO–DSO cross-border coordination to anticipate and mitigate disturbances in increasingly renewable-based systems.
The INNO4GRID project will address the decarbonisation challenges for resilient electricity networks through a cohesive architectural workbench that develops and demonstrates across Europe advanced grid technologies and RES control mechanisms, software tools and hardware assets, forecasting platforms, grid monitoring systems, TSO–DSO coordination schemes, flexibility dispatch systems, and Grid Enhancing Technologies (GET) – under one interoperable umbrella. The demonstrations will take place in Norway, Hungary, West Balkans, and Turkey engaging TSOs, DSOs, RCC, RES suppliers while collaboration is established with energy services providers from storage, aggregation and demand response.

Fields of science (EuroSciVoc)

CORDIS classifies projects with EuroSciVoc, a multilingual taxonomy of fields of science, through a semi-automatic process based on NLP techniques. See: The European Science Vocabulary.

Keywords

Project’s keywords as indicated by the project coordinator. Not to be confused with the EuroSciVoc taxonomy (Fields of science)

Programme(s)

Multi-annual funding programmes that define the EU’s priorities for research and innovation.

Topic(s)

Calls for proposals are divided into topics. A topic defines a specific subject or area for which applicants can submit proposals. The description of a topic comprises its specific scope and the expected impact of the funded project.

Funding Scheme

Funding scheme (or “Type of Action”) inside a programme with common features. It specifies: the scope of what is funded; the reimbursement rate; specific evaluation criteria to qualify for funding; and the use of simplified forms of costs like lump sums.
