Generalized Fermat equations, Darmon's program and Hypergeometric motives

Objective

This project addresses the Generalized Fermat Conjecture, one of the most challenging open problems in number theory. While the modular method has led to remarkable breakthroughs, including the proof of Fermat’s Last Theorem, its application to more general equations remains limited. Recently, a new framework was introduced by the supervisor through the use of hypergeometric motives, opening an unexplored direction for research. At the same time, the ER has contributed to Darmon’s program, a complementary approach aiming at the same goal.

Building on these two advances, the project will pursue three main objectives: to develop a general strategy to apply the modular method to an arbitrary generalized Fermat equation, to establish modularity results for totally real hypergeometric motives, and to prove new cases of the Generalized Fermat Conjecture involving signatures with three distinct prime exponents.

Fields of science (EuroSciVoc)

CORDIS classifies projects with EuroSciVoc, a multilingual taxonomy of fields of science, through a semi-automatic process based on NLP techniques. See: The European Science Vocabulary.

Keywords

Project’s keywords as indicated by the project coordinator. Not to be confused with the EuroSciVoc taxonomy (Fields of science)

Programme(s)

Multi-annual funding programmes that define the EU’s priorities for research and innovation.

Topic(s)

Calls for proposals are divided into topics. A topic defines a specific subject or area for which applicants can submit proposals. The description of a topic comprises its specific scope and the expected impact of the funded project.

Funding Scheme

Funding scheme (or “Type of Action”) inside a programme with common features. It specifies: the scope of what is funded; the reimbursement rate; specific evaluation criteria to qualify for funding; and the use of simplified forms of costs like lump sums.
