Transitioning Agrifood SMEs to Bio-Based Packaging Solutions

Objective

AgriBioPack accelerates agrifood Small and Medium-sized Enterprises' (SMEs') shift from fossil to bio-based packaging by closing the evidence, compliance and investment gaps that prevent adoption at scale. The project operates as an integrated SME adoption system: technical validation, territorial supply integration, digital verification, capability building and scale-up instruments are developed in parallel and synchronised through a four-phase cycle, helping SMEs move from interest to validated and adopted biopackaging with reduced risk. A 16-partner consortium will establish four Local Transformation Hubs in Ireland, Spain, Italy and Greece, linked by Bioeconomy Corridors that translate local side-streams, conversion capacity and end-of-life routes into feasible supply and routing envelopes. Through four sector demonstrators (dairy/meat; fresh produce; fish/seafood; takeaway/delivery) and a stage-gated design-to-certification workflow, AgriBioPack will co-design more than 60 packaging Stock Keeping Units (SKUs), narrow them via explicit stop/go gates, and advance >10 to industrially relevant line validation, delivering certifier-ready evidence packs targeting 40–50% fossil-plastic mass substitution per validated SKU. A standards-aligned Monitoring, Reporting and Verification (MRV) and Digital Product Passport (DPP)-ready digital backbone will provide auditable proof with minimal SME reporting burden, while the AgriBioPack Academy equips SMEs through credentialed training and facilitator networks. Through engaging with investors and financial actors, AgroBioPack will secure sustainability of the project in the 4 demonstration regions, and set the stage for replication in 6 others regions with varying value-chain and territorial contexts. AgriBioPack co-creates innovative business and governance models to deploy physical and digital technologies, equipping SMEs with the tools and knowledge needed to reduce environmental impact and enhance industrial competitiveness for a resilient and circular bioeconomy.

Fields of science (EuroSciVoc)

CORDIS classifies projects with EuroSciVoc, a multilingual taxonomy of fields of science, through a semi-automatic process based on NLP techniques. See: The European Science Vocabulary.

Keywords

Project’s keywords as indicated by the project coordinator. Not to be confused with the EuroSciVoc taxonomy (Fields of science)

Programme(s)

Multi-annual funding programmes that define the EU’s priorities for research and innovation.

Topic(s)

Calls for proposals are divided into topics. A topic defines a specific subject or area for which applicants can submit proposals. The description of a topic comprises its specific scope and the expected impact of the funded project.

Funding Scheme

Funding scheme (or “Type of Action”) inside a programme with common features. It specifies: the scope of what is funded; the reimbursement rate; specific evaluation criteria to qualify for funding; and the use of simplified forms of costs like lump sums.
