A Creative Partnership for Sustainable Soil Management and Soil literacy promotion in LAC

Objective

SoilMinds tackles soil degradation in Latin America and the Caribbean (LAC) through a multi-actor, living-lab-inspired model that blends science, technology, arts and local knowledge. The project will support 18 participatory soil initiatives across Brazil, Chile, Argentina, Mexico, Ecuador and Trinidad & Tobago, including 6 Front Runners and 12 Micro Soil Hubs funded through Financial Support to Third Parties (FSTP). In real-life sites, land managers/users, communities, researchers, artists, SMEs/start-ups, civil society and advisers will co-design, test and scale context-specific practices that address desertification, erosion, contamination, soil organic matter decline, biodiversity loss and low soil literacy.

Solutions combine real-time monitoring (soil sensors, earth observation, weather stations) with open dashboards and practical measures: cover crops, agroforestry, biochar, green infrastructure, and phytoremediation. Arts-based methods (mapping, murals, theatre) deepen engagement, translate science, and embed stewardship in local culture.

A SoilMinds Exchange & Incubator Mechanism will host tools, protocols, cases, governance templates, and training, enabling peer learning, replication, and investment readiness. Open science and FAIR data ensure interoperability and feed the EU Soil Observatory (EUSO).

Expected outcomes: (i) soil degradation minimised or reversed and soil health improved; (ii) communities and small land managers gain access to scalable, practice-oriented tools and training; (iii) a recognised mechanism for exchange and scaling of solutions; (iv) evidence for policies that support context-specific, knowledge-based soil management. The project integrates SSH and gender analysis, advances SDGs 13 and 15, and aligns with the EU Soil Strategy 2030. By coupling adaptive governance with Financial Support to Third Parties and a strong multi-actor approach, SoilMinds will deliver measurable gains for food security, climate resilience, and livelihoods, and set pathways for long-term sustainability, replication, and policy uptake across LAC.

Programme(s)

Multi-annual funding programmes that define the EU’s priorities for research and innovation.

Topic(s)

Calls for proposals are divided into topics. A topic defines a specific subject or area for which applicants can submit proposals. The description of a topic comprises its specific scope and the expected impact of the funded project.

Funding Scheme

Funding scheme (or “Type of Action”) inside a programme with common features. It specifies: the scope of what is funded; the reimbursement rate; specific evaluation criteria to qualify for funding; and the use of simplified forms of costs like lump sums.

Call for proposal

Procedure for inviting applicants to submit project proposals, with the aim of receiving EU funding.
