Objective
HEROCROP improves the resilience of European cropping systems by developing, testing and validating multi-stress–resilient strategies for wheat, pea and open-field tomato across contrasting Mediterranean, Atlantic, Boreal and South sub-continental pedoclimatic regions. The project introduces a novel approach that moves beyond single-stress screening by systematically evaluating diverse genetic resources— commercial varieties, advanced breeding lines and especially locally adapted landraces/conservation varieties—under realistic combinations of abiotic and biotic stresses, both in controlled environments and in multi-location field networks.
HEROCROP builds an end-to-end pipeline that integrates harmonised multi-scale phenotyping and envirotyping protocols, multi-omics profiling and causal inference to reveal mechanisms and trait targets driving tolerance and stability under sequential and simultaneous stresses. These datasets underpin the first integrated G×E×M modelling and ML/AI-supported Digital Twins to predict performance, plasticity and risk across environments, management regimes and future climate scenarios.
The project translates evidence into actionable innovative outputs: an open Multi-Stress Trait Atlas and FAIR datasets to support future improvement of GxExM models, validated plasticity metrics and protocols, region-specific variety–management recommendation matrices, and a digital Benchmarking Platform supporting farmer and advisor decision-making. Impact is ensured through collaborative validation with breeders and a network of on-farm “Baby Trials” implemented via cascade funding, extending HEROCROP beyond the core consortium and generating real-world data and demonstrations.
Through Open Science, stakeholder engagement and structured exploitation strategies, HEROCROP strengthens EU capacity to breed and deploy climate-resilient, low-input and biodiversity-friendly crop solutions, contributing to food security, soil health and climate adaptation.

Net EU financial contribution. The sum of money that the participant receives, deducted by the EU contribution to its linked third party. It considers the distribution of the EU financial contribution between direct beneficiaries of the project and other types of participants, like third-party participants.
