Objective
Across science and engineering, synchronization emerges when interacting systems in biology, physics, or social dynamics, spontaneously align their dynamics. This project focuses on a critical manifestation of synchronization, vortex-induced vibrations (VIV), occurring when alternating vortices shed from slender structures. In civil engineering it results in continuous and sustained vibrations of bridges, transmission lines, onshore wind turbines supports, tension legs of offshore wind turbines. These vibrations synchronize along the span of a structure, amplify motion, accelerate fatigue, and pose serious safety and maintenance challenges. Addressing this phenomenon is key to building resilient and environmentally responsible infrastructure.
Current design practices rely on simplified models that fail to capture three-dimensional wake dynamics and turbulence-induced randomness, both of which are essential for accurate prediction. High-fidelity computational fluid dynamics and experiments provide detailed insight but are too expensive for routine use.
This project closes this gap by developing a modelling framework that represents VIV as a chain of coupled nonlinear oscillators, subject to stochastic perturbations. The approach combines physics-informed modelling, data-driven refinement, and modern dynamical-systems theory to produce a robust, scalable tool. The research pursues three objectives: (1) develop and validate this new VIV model, (2) quantify turbulence effects through stochastic modelling, and (3) deliver a fast open solver for full-scale prediction.
The outcomes will contribute to safer and more sustainable structural designs. By advancing a tractable yet realistic methodology, the project directly supports the Sustainable Development Goals and the MSCA Green Charter, fostering infrastructure solutions aligned with global sustainability priorities, while contributing methods for broader applications in complex dynamical systems and other disciplines.

Net EU financial contribution. The sum of money that the participant receives, deducted by the EU contribution to its linked third party. It considers the distribution of the EU financial contribution between direct beneficiaries of the project and other types of participants, like third-party participants.
