ECOdesign criteria for Sustainability in footwear and Testing methods for Evaluation of Performance

Objective

ECOSTEP is a 48-month project to develop, test, and validate an advanced ecodesign methodology for the footwear sector, addressing circularity, durability, and social sustainability across the full value chain. The project will deliver an AI-based tool integrating Life Cycle Sustainability Assessment (LCSA), predictive modelling, and Digital Product Passport (DPP) functionalities to evaluate ecodesign requirements and establish standardised methodologies for performance verification. At least six footwear products will be analysed to identify priority raw materials for circular substitution and to validate new testing methods that enhance durability, reparability, recyclability, and biodegradability.

ECOSTEP will also provide digital platforms, tools, and tailored training modules to support SMEs, manufacturers, and policymakers in implementing ecodesign principles and achieving compliance with the Ecodesign for Sustainable Products Regulation (ESPR). Through collaborative validation and stakeholder engagement, the project will ensure usability and scalability of its results, ultimately delivering a standardised assessment framework that improves environmental performance, enhances data quality and transparency, and accelerates the adoption of circular economy practices in the European footwear industry.

Fields of science (EuroSciVoc)

CORDIS classifies projects with EuroSciVoc, a multilingual taxonomy of fields of science, through a semi-automatic process based on NLP techniques. See: The European Science Vocabulary.

Keywords

Project’s keywords as indicated by the project coordinator. Not to be confused with the EuroSciVoc taxonomy (Fields of science)

Programme(s)

Multi-annual funding programmes that define the EU’s priorities for research and innovation.

Topic(s)

Calls for proposals are divided into topics. A topic defines a specific subject or area for which applicants can submit proposals. The description of a topic comprises its specific scope and the expected impact of the funded project.

Funding Scheme

Funding scheme (or “Type of Action”) inside a programme with common features. It specifies: the scope of what is funded; the reimbursement rate; specific evaluation criteria to qualify for funding; and the use of simplified forms of costs like lump sums.
