Project description
Unifying data-driven framework to study hot and cold QCD matter
At standard temperatures and densities, quarks are ‘confined’ – bound tightly with gluons by the strong force, forming composite particles such as protons and neutrons. Under extreme conditions, the force weakens, liberating quarks and gluons into a quark-gluon plasma. Quantum chromodynamics (QCD) describes these phenomena. With the support of the Marie Skłodowska-Curie Actions programme, the GSQUAD project aims to unify the study of cold and hot QCD matter by integrating multiple types of scattering and collision data into a single Bayesian framework. GSQUAD’s pioneering data-driven approach will advance understanding of QCD behaviour and properties, including gluon saturation. An open-source computational platform will enable simulations and predictions supporting current and future collision experiments.
Objective
GSQUAD unifies the study of cold and hot QCD matter by integrating deep inelastic scattering, ultra-peripheral collision, and heavy-ion collision data into a single Bayesian framework. Leveraging the Color Glass Condensate effective theory and JIMWLK evolution, it will simultaneously constrain nucleon structure, small-x gluon dynamics, and quark-gluon plasma (QGP) transport properties. Novel Bayesian reweighting techniques and global inference will propagate uncertainties consistently across observables, connecting nuclear structure to the properties of the QGP. The project will also develop an open-source computational framework to support reproducible simulations and predictions for current LHC measurements and future Electron-Ion Collider experiments. By bridging cold and hot QCD physics, GSQUAD provides a pioneering, data-driven approach that simultaneously uncovers gluon saturation and determines fundamental transport properties of the quark–gluon plasma.

Net EU financial contribution. The sum of money that the participant receives, deducted by the EU contribution to its linked third party. It considers the distribution of the EU financial contribution between direct beneficiaries of the project and other types of participants, like third-party participants.
