Objective
CAMs for Biosphere Atmosphere exchangeS, CAMBAS, builds on the current CAMS technology and combines it with the latest research findings worldwide, thus paving the way towards integrated monitoring and forecasting of surface-atmosphere exchange processes relevant for CAMS global and regional models
CAMBAS will construct, demonstrate, and prepare to uptake by CAMS services a consistent set of models describing the key biophysical processes responsible for the soil-vegetation-atmosphere exchange of BVOCs, NO, a range of pollen species, and acidifying and eutrophying compounds, constrained via assimilation of Earth Observations and inverse modelling
CAMBAS will:
- Strongly improve dynamic global/European vegetation modelling
- Improve quality of the BVOC and soil-NO emission modelling
- Advance the EO based optimization of BVOC and soil-NO emission assessment and deposition fluxes via data assimilation and source inversion
- Enhance CAMS capabilities to support policies related to eutrophication and acidification worldwide by evaluating the advanced deposition models, assimilation of relevant satellite and in-situ data
- Improve accuracy of the currently available species in the regional CAMS pollen service and approach global pollen modelling
- Demonstrate and disseminate the outcomes of CAMBAS and provide evidence-based recommendations and guidance to CAMS and other stakeholders and decision-makers
To answer these challenges, CAMBAS consortium is composed of European and global leaders in atmospheric composition modelling, biogenic processes, and bioaerosols, as well as in Earth Observations data assimilation and inverse modelling. It includes CAMS coordinator, key developers of CAMS global chemistry and aerosol modelling, four CAMS regional models, leading institutes of CAMS pollen and BVOC services, modelling centers of EMEP and EU Horizon SYLVA, key experts on BVOC global modelling and data assimilation, and the OECD best-practice MASK-Air mHealth app.
