Programmable network of time-multiplexed nonlinear resonators in nanophotonic lithium niobate

Objective

The growing power demands of machine learning call for new computing paradigms. Photonic integrated circuits are promising high bandwidths, reduced energy consumption, and ultra-low latency computing. Yet, scalable all-optical solutions that outperform electronic systems are still outstanding. Simultaneously, topological photonics has emerged as a versatile platform for simulating complex physical processes from condensed matter physics, such as quantum Hall effects, Floquet dynamics, and Weyl points. However, realizing high-dimensional topological lattices remains challenging due to the inherent limitations of conventional spatial architectures. The aim of this project is to demonstrate a PROgrammable Network of TIme-multiplexed nonlinear resonators in nanophotonic Lithium niobate (PRONTIL) based on two integrated cavities coupled via electro-optic modulators with pulsed operation for time-multiplexing. We will harness this system as an Ising machine to solve combinatorial optimization problems challenging for conventional computers. Ultimately, we aim to use the all-to-all coupling to build a synthetic lattice supporting topological states of light. The demonstration of the first all-optical integrated Ising machine provides a crucial step towards scalable photonic processors. By leveraging synthetic dimensions and topological photonics, the research will deepen our understanding of robust light-matter interactions and enable new architectures for fault-tolerant optical information processing. The outcomes will contribute to both fundamental science and applied technology, fostering innovation in photonic computing while strengthening the connection between optics and condensed matter physics. The scientific excellence of PRONTIL, along with the experience gained during the PF, will greatly improve my chances of obtaining an ERC Starting Grant, or secure a tenure-track position to establish my own research group.

Keywords

Project’s keywords as indicated by the project coordinator. Not to be confused with the EuroSciVoc taxonomy (Fields of science)

Programme(s)

Multi-annual funding programmes that define the EU’s priorities for research and innovation.

Topic(s)

Calls for proposals are divided into topics. A topic defines a specific subject or area for which applicants can submit proposals. The description of a topic comprises its specific scope and the expected impact of the funded project.

Funding Scheme

Funding scheme (or “Type of Action”) inside a programme with common features. It specifies: the scope of what is funded; the reimbursement rate; specific evaluation criteria to qualify for funding; and the use of simplified forms of costs like lump sums.
