Biofuels and MOF-Biochar absorbent composite recovery from pyrolysis of wheat straw and plastic waste

Objective

The Baltic region is a major agricultural hub in Northern Europe, generating massive amounts of lignocellulosic-rich agricultural waste, particularly wheat straw (WS), which has limited applications and low value, requiring serious solutions. In this context, this BioMOF project aims to convert WS into biofuel and biochar using pyrolysis technique after mixing it with plastic waste (PW) to increase the hydrogen to carbon ratio and improve fuel efficiency. The surface of biochar will also be chemically modified and then mixed with metal-organic framework (MOF) to produce MOF-biochar composites with high absorption of heavy metals from contaminated water. The spent absorbent materials will be used as filler for construction materials for safe disposal followed by a study of their environmental and techno-economic impacts. Biofuel and biochar will be produced by pyrolysis of PW/WS at different mixing ratios to obtain the best mixing that provides maximum biofuel yield at Lithuanian Energy Institute (WP1). The biochar surface will then be chemically modified to remove impurities and increase porosity and surface area, followed by mixing with MOF using ball milling, resulting in highly absorbent MOF-biochar composites for metal removal from aquatic environments at Kaunas University of Technology (WP2). To ensure safe disposal of the spent adsorbent materials, they will be used to partially replace cement in mortar and enhance its mechanical properties as an eco-friendly application. Finally, LCA and economic analysis will be developed to demonstrate their environmental and economic performance at KTU (WP3). This research could provide sustainable, eco-friendly, and economical solutions for WS and PS management, as well as a low-cost platform for the production of competitive and sustainable biofuels, MOF-Biochar adsorbents, and building materials.

Programme(s)

Multi-annual funding programmes that define the EU’s priorities for research and innovation.

Topic(s)

Calls for proposals are divided into topics. A topic defines a specific subject or area for which applicants can submit proposals. The description of a topic comprises its specific scope and the expected impact of the funded project.

Funding Scheme

Funding scheme (or “Type of Action”) inside a programme with common features. It specifies: the scope of what is funded; the reimbursement rate; specific evaluation criteria to qualify for funding; and the use of simplified forms of costs like lump sums.
