Objective
DNAPhotoCat aims at combining DNA-based bio-hybrid catalysis with asymmetric photocatalysis to develop new, highly enantioselective and sustainable photocatalytic processes, with a special emphasis given to applications in biomimetic natural product synthesis, which have no equivalent to date. To reach this goal, we will design and synthesize highly enantioselective DNA-based photocatalysts [WP1], evaluate their photocatalytic activity in asymmetric visible light-mediated [2+2] photocycloadditions [WP2], and apply the method to the biomimetic total synthesis of structurally intriguing natural products [WP3]. To maximise our chances of success, both supramolecular and covalent anchoring strategies will be investigated in parallel. Most importantly, we will be promoting these reactions under visible light irradiation (400-800 nm) and under anaerobic conditions to prevent any DNA damage during the process. By doing so, not only do we intend to expand the current frontiers of DNA-based asymmetric catalysis (DAC), we also wish to set a mind change and unquestionably place DNA-based catalysts in the chemists’ toolbox. The project, which builds on the complementary expertise of the experienced researcher, Dr Sadhna Shah (SS), and the PI at the host institution, Dr Stellios Arseniyadis (SA), aims to provide new biohybrid catalytic systems with increased reactivity, improved selectivity and unmatched sustainability. Most importantly, this project will provide a fantastic opportunity for the fellow to nurture her skills, expand her current expertise and ultimately reach a high level of personal and professional maturity.

Net EU financial contribution. The sum of money that the participant receives, deducted by the EU contribution to its linked third party. It considers the distribution of the EU financial contribution between direct beneficiaries of the project and other types of participants, like third-party participants.
