Theory and applications of Floquet light-matter crystals

Project description

Theoretical and practical investigation of Floquet light-matter crystals

Floquet light-matter crystals are non-equilibrium systems using periodic, high-intensity light driving to dynamically modulate the electronic or photonic structure of materials, inducing novel properties like topological phases. Utilising photonic crystal lattices and atomic arrays, these platforms enable temporal control of photonic modes and couplings, producing strong and tuneable photon-emitter interactions. With the support of the Marie Skłodowska-Curie Actions programme, the FLIMAC project aims to develop and apply theoretical tools describing the dynamics of Floquet light-matter crystals. Key goals are increasing the strength and flexibility of photon-mediated interactions and designing deterministic, frequency-multiplexed photonic quantum gates. This could lay the foundation for quantum interfaces leveraging many-body interactions for scalable quantum technologies.

Objective

This project will explore Floquet light-matter crystals (FLIMAC), a new paradigm where atomic arrays and photonic crystal lattices are dynamically modulated in time. Unlike static systems, these platforms enable strong and tunable photon–emitter interactions through temporal control of photonic modes and couplings. To explore their potential, the project will develop theoretical tools to describe such intrinsically non-Markovian dynamics and apply them to two key objectives: (i) exploiting time-modulated photonic reservoirs to enhance the strength and flexibility of photon-mediated interactions, and (ii) engineering multi-photon scattering from modulated emitters to design deterministic, frequency-multiplexed photonic quantum gates. By bridging advanced theory with experimentally relevant architectures, FLIMAC will establish a foundation for quantum interfaces that harness dynamical control to realize many-body interactions and enable scalable quantum technologies.

Fields of science (EuroSciVoc)

CORDIS classifies projects with EuroSciVoc, a multilingual taxonomy of fields of science, through a semi-automatic process based on NLP techniques. See: The European Science Vocabulary.
This project's classification has been human-validated.

Programme(s)

Multi-annual funding programmes that define the EU’s priorities for research and innovation.

Topic(s)

Calls for proposals are divided into topics. A topic defines a specific subject or area for which applicants can submit proposals. The description of a topic comprises its specific scope and the expected impact of the funded project.

Funding Scheme

Funding scheme (or “Type of Action”) inside a programme with common features. It specifies: the scope of what is funded; the reimbursement rate; specific evaluation criteria to qualify for funding; and the use of simplified forms of costs like lump sums.

Net EU contribution

Net EU financial contribution. The sum of money that the participant receives, deducted by the EU contribution to its linked third party. It considers the distribution of the EU financial contribution between direct beneficiaries of the project and other types of participants, like third-party participants.
