Project description
Mog Ruith the Irish Magician: Reviving Medieval Legend in Modern Irish Scholarship
The legendary druid Mog Ruith is a cornerstone of Irish heritage, yet he remains significantly understudied, with many essential texts hidden in unpublished manuscripts. Supported by the Marie Skłodowska-Curie Actions programme, the ROTH project aims to produce the first comprehensive, multidisciplinary study of this complex figure. It will provide annotated editions and translations of key historical texts, and advance a novel methodology that connects literary development with historical context. Beyond academia, ROTH will foster wider engagement with Irish language and cultural heritage through an accessible anthology and targeted outreach activities. By bridging together Celtic studies, history, palaeography, literature, linguistics and religious studies, the project’s goal is to advance Irish scholarship and preserve this vital history for both scholars and the public.
Objective
ROTH offers the first comprehensive, multidisciplinary study of the legendary druid Mog Ruith, a crucial and complex figure in Irish heritage. He has never been the subject of extended research, and essential texts concerning him remain unpublished. ROTH will illuminate this vital aspect of Irish history and literature, enhancing public appreciation of Ireland’s minority language and cultural legacy. It will produce commented editions and translations of key texts about Mog Ruith, which are currently only available in manuscript form or lack an academic translation. It will also introduce a novel methodology for analysing mythological figures in Celtic studies by linking literary evolution with historical context. ROTH outputs will include an anthology featuring the aforementioned editions, as well as dissemination activities targeting both academic and general public audiences.
These deliverables would mark a significant advancement in Irish scholarship, benefiting many stakeholders, including Celtic scholars, historians, archaeologists, linguists, literary scholars, palaeographers, specialists in religious studies, education professionals, students, and the general public with an interest in the topic.
I will work at University College Cork (UCC) under the supervision of Professor John Carey, who has made significant contributions to the scholarship on Mog Ruith. UCC has gained the HR Excellence in Research Award and is recognised internationally as a leading research centre, offering a wide range of opportunities for research career development. This combination of research environment, mentor, and host organisation will significantly improve my skillset and employability through increased interdisciplinary expertise at the intersection of history, literature, linguistics, cultural heritage, textual criticism, and palaeography, advancing my chances of success in a competitive academic career.
