Objective
MOCoPoly is at the intersection of synthetic chemistry, materials science, and electronics, aiming to develop a new material class, metal-organic conducting polymers for bioelectronic devices. Bioelectronics is a rapidly developing field aiming to interface soft, polymer-based electronic sensors and electrodes with biological systems. Inspired by the benchmark material PEDOT:PSS but overcoming its limitations in synthetic tunability, difficult post-processing requirements and sustainability, MOCoPoly introduces metal-ligand coordination into PEDOT backbones. This strategy combines the intriguing electronic potential demonstrated in 2D conjugated metal-organic frameworks (2D c-MOFs) with solution processability and flexibility required for soft electronics. The polymers will be synthetically tunable, degradable, and recyclable, key features for next-generation bio-interfaces.
The project targets to deliver a library of metal-organic polymers targeting conductivities >1000 S cm⁻¹ and mobilities >10 cm² V⁻¹ s⁻¹ without the need for harsh post-processing, fabricated via green solvothermal routes and templated assembly methods. These will be integrated into functional soft devices, including a prototype neural electrode. MOCoPoly follows a structured work plan over a 36-month period split between Stanford University and the Max Planck Institute of Microstructure Physics, leveraging complementary infrastructure and interdisciplinary expertise in polymer synthesis, thin-film processing, and device integration.
I will gain experience in project execution, scientific communication, mentoring, and entrepreneurship. Outcomes will be widely disseminated via open-access publications, patents, and public outreach. MOCoPoly will contribute to the EU’s strategic goals in sustainable innovation, health technologies, and technological autonomy, while positioning the me for an independent research career in Europe.
