Interplay between Topological Insulators and 2D Magnets from First Principles (TopMagnets)

Objective

Electric control of the magnetization is an essential prerequisite for the realization of high-performance spintronic devices. Leveraging the remarkable electronic properties of topological insulators (TIs) interacting with magnetic particles and novel two-dimensional (2D) magnets is an attractive route towards this goal, which has given promising results for the effective control of the magnetization tunable by a gate voltage. However, several challenges for their successful technological implementation remain, including their operation at cryogenic temperatures and the limited understanding of the interactions at the interface. In this project, I propose to overcome these problems by coupling the archetypal TIs, Bi2Te3 and SnTe, with the novel layered 2D magnet CrSBr, whose bilayer and monolayer present antiferromagnetic (AFM) and ferromagnetic (FM) order, respectively, with transition temperatures close to 140 K. Employing first principles approaches such as numerical calculations based on density functional theory (DFT) combined with model Hamiltonians, I will investigate the main properties arising from their interaction, in particular, the preservation of the topological character of the band structure and changes in the exchange interactions responsible for the magnetic ordering. The outcome of the project will lay a strong theoretical foundation for the realization of spintronic devices based on TIs and 2D magnets.

Programme(s)

Multi-annual funding programmes that define the EU’s priorities for research and innovation.

Topic(s)

Calls for proposals are divided into topics. A topic defines a specific subject or area for which applicants can submit proposals. The description of a topic comprises its specific scope and the expected impact of the funded project.

Funding Scheme

Funding scheme (or “Type of Action”) inside a programme with common features. It specifies: the scope of what is funded; the reimbursement rate; specific evaluation criteria to qualify for funding; and the use of simplified forms of costs like lump sums.
