Development of Carbonation-Cured Alkali-Activated Aggregates from Municipal Solid Waste Incineration Ash and Phosphogypsum for Sustainable Infrastructure Development.

Objective

The rapid growth of population and urbanization has led to an unprecedented increase in the generation of municipal solid waste (MSW), necessitating effective and sustainable disposal strategies. Waste-to-energy plants offer a partial solution; however, they produce large volumes of municipal solid waste incineration ash (MSWIA), which is toxic and typically landfilled posing significant environmental risks. Likewise, the fertilizer industry’s dependence on phosphoric acid has resulted in the generation of vast quantities of phosphogypsum (PG), an acidic by-product, which pose serious ecological challenges due to its large-scale stockpiling. Concurrently, the escalating release of carbon dioxide (CO2) from various industrial sectors has intensified global warming and climate change, highlighting the urgent need for strategies to mitigate atmospheric emissions. To address these challenges, this proposal investigates the development of lightweight aggregates through the alkali activation of MSWIA and PG, combined with carbonation curing to enhance CO2 sequestration. In this process, aggregates are exposed to CO2 under controlled pressure and time conditions, facilitating a reaction between CO2 and unreacted CaO in the raw materials (particularly in MSWIA and PG) to form CaCO3. This precipitate acts as a binding agent, filling surface pores, reducing water absorption, and improving both surface hardness and overall mechanical strength. This approach not only promotes the bulk utilization of wastes in the creation of lightweight aggregates for concrete production but also contributes to carbon capture. Overall, the research aligns with circular economy principles and supports sustainable development goals by providing sustainable construction materials for infrastructure development.

Keywords

Project’s keywords as indicated by the project coordinator. Not to be confused with the EuroSciVoc taxonomy (Fields of science)

Programme(s)

Multi-annual funding programmes that define the EU’s priorities for research and innovation.

Topic(s)

Calls for proposals are divided into topics. A topic defines a specific subject or area for which applicants can submit proposals. The description of a topic comprises its specific scope and the expected impact of the funded project.

Funding Scheme

Funding scheme (or “Type of Action”) inside a programme with common features. It specifies: the scope of what is funded; the reimbursement rate; specific evaluation criteria to qualify for funding; and the use of simplified forms of costs like lump sums.
