UV Clues for the Cosmos: Positivity Constraints for Lorentz-Violating EFTs

Objective

Cosmic inflation and dark energy represent the leading paradigms for describing the early and late-time acceleration of our Universe. However, the fundamental physics driving these phenomena remains unknown, resulting in a vast landscape of competing theoretical models. A key challenge is to distinguish physically viable theories from those that, despite appearances, are inconsistent with fundamental principles like causality, locality, and unitarity.
Powerful consistency checks, known as positivity bounds, have successfully ruled out entire classes of models in other contexts. These bounds, however, are built on the assumption of Lorentz invariance, a symmetry that is spontaneously broken by the evolving cosmological background itself. This roadblock has left the parameter space for inflation and dark energy theories largely unconstrained from a fundamental standpoint.
This project, UV-CLUE (UltraViolet Constraints on Lorentz-violating Universe EFTs), will pioneer novel techniques to overcome this long-standing obstacle. By developing a new framework based on the scattering of auxiliary probe fields, UV-CLUE will derive the first positivity bounds for these Lorentz-violating systems. The project will establish robust, model-independent constraints on the key operators within the Effective Field Theories that govern cosmological dynamics. These results will provide powerful theoretical priors for observational analyses from next-generation surveys, significantly narrowing the search for new physics. Ultimately, UV-CLUE will deliver essential theoretical tools to test the fundamental viability of our cosmological models and guide us toward the true nature of our Universe.

Fields of science (EuroSciVoc)

CORDIS classifies projects with EuroSciVoc, a multilingual taxonomy of fields of science, through a semi-automatic process based on NLP techniques. See: The European Science Vocabulary.

Keywords

Project’s keywords as indicated by the project coordinator. Not to be confused with the EuroSciVoc taxonomy (Fields of science)

Programme(s)

Multi-annual funding programmes that define the EU’s priorities for research and innovation.

Topic(s)

Calls for proposals are divided into topics. A topic defines a specific subject or area for which applicants can submit proposals. The description of a topic comprises its specific scope and the expected impact of the funded project.

Funding Scheme

Funding scheme (or “Type of Action”) inside a programme with common features. It specifies: the scope of what is funded; the reimbursement rate; specific evaluation criteria to qualify for funding; and the use of simplified forms of costs like lump sums.

Net EU contribution

Net EU financial contribution. The sum of money that the participant receives, deducted by the EU contribution to its linked third party. It considers the distribution of the EU financial contribution between direct beneficiaries of the project and other types of participants, like third-party participants.
