Objective
Hosted by the Department of Historical Studies at University of Gothenburg, HERLAND’s overarching aim is to investigate how early modern women’s relationship with nature straddled the paradoxical boundary between domesticity or the household as a form of limitation and the landscape as a space that enabled agency, focusing particularly on women’s relationship with nature as a dichotomy between domestic and public, domestication and wild. The project concentrates on the distinct cultural and historical contexts of Sweden (Finland as part of kingdom), Denmark, and northern Germany (Northern Europe) between 1500-1800. My primary research question is: what role did women play, and to what extent, in the environmental activities, natural resource management, and human-animal relations in Northern Europe? In addressing this question, HERLAND will focus on 3 parallel themes within the early modern natural world: women, environment(s), and human-animal relations. I will collaborate with 2 UNESCO sites Drottningholm Palace in Sweden and Parforcejagtlandskabet i Nordsjælland (‘Par force hunting landscape in North Zealand’) in Denmark to support the landscape and environmental dimensions. I will develop a new methodological framework that incorporates interdisciplinary methods and produces 2 digital tools–GIS map and 3D/drone capture–to fully engage and gain a cultural understanding of the lived experiences of early modern women. This will reveal the connection between the past and the present with regards to women’s relationship with landscapes, and the continuous historical presence of women involved in environmental sustainability issues. HERLAND extends beyond the state of the art by producing the first study that links gender studies with mapping of historical environments, landscapes, animal habitats in Northern Europe, while also connecting the past and present through the continuous cultural and historical presence of women’s involvement in nature.
