Nanoengineering lithium niobate metasurfaces for nonlinear and quantum photonics

Objective

Quantum technologies research attracted much interest in the scientific and industrial communities as holding the promise to deliver secure communications, higher data exchange rates and much higher computational power compared to classical digital systems. Among the various alternatives, photons are ideal for quantum applications because of their high coherence, room-temperature operation and compatibility with CMOS technology. Nonetheless, photons for quantum applications typically relies on nonlinear optical process whose efficiency is limited by phase matching conditions and inherent low conversion efficiency of the pump field. In this context, ENLighteN will develop a novel approach to boost the efficiency of nonlinear light generation, specifically for producing nonclassical light to be implemented in quantum applications. The first objective is to the design and realize new metasurfaces simultaneously supporting multiple distinct collective resonances, and the integration with nonlinear materials, such as lithium niobate thin film - a material known for its high second-order nonlinear polarization and wide transparency window. In the second objective, ENLithgteN will assess the multiple resonant metasurface enhanced nonlinear generation efficiency, while the third objective will focus on using the improved nonlinear generation to produce nonclassical light for future quantum applications. ENLighteN is expected to open groundbreaking pathways towards the development of future quantum technologies with benefits for previously inaccessible industrial and scientific applications.

Fields of science (EuroSciVoc)

CORDIS classifies projects with EuroSciVoc, a multilingual taxonomy of fields of science, through a semi-automatic process based on NLP techniques. See: The European Science Vocabulary.

Keywords

Project’s keywords as indicated by the project coordinator. Not to be confused with the EuroSciVoc taxonomy (Fields of science)

Programme(s)

Multi-annual funding programmes that define the EU’s priorities for research and innovation.

Topic(s)

Calls for proposals are divided into topics. A topic defines a specific subject or area for which applicants can submit proposals. The description of a topic comprises its specific scope and the expected impact of the funded project.

Funding Scheme

Funding scheme (or “Type of Action”) inside a programme with common features. It specifies: the scope of what is funded; the reimbursement rate; specific evaluation criteria to qualify for funding; and the use of simplified forms of costs like lump sums.

HORIZON-TMA-MSCA-PF-GF - HORIZON TMA MSCA Postdoctoral Fellowships - Global Fellowships

Net EU contribution

Net EU financial contribution. The sum of money that the participant receives, deducted by the EU contribution to its linked third party. It considers the distribution of the EU financial contribution between direct beneficiaries of the project and other types of participants, like third-party participants.
