Microwave photonics platform for cancer detection and treatment

Objective

This proposal aims to develop a biosensing platform that integrates microwave photonics with Machine Learning (ML) to detect and eliminate carcinogenic cells, addressing the need for highly precise oncology tools. By combining ML, photonics, and innovative metasurface substrates, the platform will be optimized using inversed design for the microwave regime and incorporate an advanced microfluidic system to leverage the spectral response of glucose near 2.5 GHz, achieving targeted plasmonic resonance and consistent temperature thresholds for cancer cell elimination. In-vitro testing will validate its effectiveness for clinical readiness. The approach aligns with UN Sustainable Development Goals, particularly in advancing health and promoting scientific innovation.
Under the mentorship of Professor Laura Lechuga, the candidate will gain invaluable experience in cutting-edge nano biosensors and photonics technologies while developing crucial soft skills like leadership, decision-making, and effective communication. His advanced expertise in photonic biosensors, machine learning, genetic algorithms, and numerical methods will infuse the NanoBiosensors and Bioanalytical Applications Group at ICN2 with transformative perspectives, driving groundbreaking innovations and enriching the institution’s cultural and intellectual fabric. This collaboration will not only solidify ICN2's position as a leader in biomedical technology development and have a profound impact on the candidate's professional growth but also deliver highimpact outcomes, including publications, patents, and industry collaborations, making it a promising investment in scientific advancement and practical healthcare solutions.

Keywords

Project’s keywords as indicated by the project coordinator. Not to be confused with the EuroSciVoc taxonomy (Fields of science)

Programme(s)

Multi-annual funding programmes that define the EU’s priorities for research and innovation.

Topic(s)

Calls for proposals are divided into topics. A topic defines a specific subject or area for which applicants can submit proposals. The description of a topic comprises its specific scope and the expected impact of the funded project.

Funding Scheme

Funding scheme (or “Type of Action”) inside a programme with common features. It specifies: the scope of what is funded; the reimbursement rate; specific evaluation criteria to qualify for funding; and the use of simplified forms of costs like lump sums.
