Radical catalysed singlet fission

Objective

Singlet fission (SF) is a process in which two triplet excited states are generated from one singlet excited state. SF can be used to increase current in solar cells, reducing losses from thermalisation and boosting solar cell efficiency, but poor triplet yields and short lifetimes limit the implementation of SF in devices. Stable organic radicals are an emerging class of materials that exhibit excited doublet states rather than singlet and triplet, allowing them to mediate otherwise spin-forbidden process. RADCAT will explore new frontiers of SF by unlocking energy transfer mechanisms that enable organic radicals to catalyse a step-wise SF process. As well as providing a new path to long-lived triplet excitons that can be used to increase the efficiency of solar cells, RADCAT will investigate the magnetic field sensitivity of these energy transfer processes, and thus design new magnetic field sensors for applications in quantum information science and photonics. The action combines the fellow’s previous research in SF and photophysics with the expertise of the host group in organic radicals and spin chemistry, and will enhance the fellows career by building new skills in spin and magneto-optical effects.

Fields of science (EuroSciVoc)

CORDIS classifies projects with EuroSciVoc, a multilingual taxonomy of fields of science, through a semi-automatic process based on NLP techniques. See: The European Science Vocabulary.

Keywords

Project’s keywords as indicated by the project coordinator. Not to be confused with the EuroSciVoc taxonomy (Fields of science)

Programme(s)

Multi-annual funding programmes that define the EU’s priorities for research and innovation.

Topic(s)

Calls for proposals are divided into topics. A topic defines a specific subject or area for which applicants can submit proposals. The description of a topic comprises its specific scope and the expected impact of the funded project.

Funding Scheme

Funding scheme (or “Type of Action”) inside a programme with common features. It specifies: the scope of what is funded; the reimbursement rate; specific evaluation criteria to qualify for funding; and the use of simplified forms of costs like lump sums.

Net EU contribution

Net EU financial contribution. The sum of money that the participant receives, deducted by the EU contribution to its linked third party. It considers the distribution of the EU financial contribution between direct beneficiaries of the project and other types of participants, like third-party participants.
