Objective
Pastoralism spans nearly one-third of Earth’s land surface and supports over 500 million people. These systems sustain food security, biodiversity, and cultural heritage, and reflect collective arrangements that regulate fragile landscapes. Yet livestock production contributes nearly 15% of global greenhouse gas emissions, fueling interest in “regenerative” or “sustainable” grazing models that aim to reconcile productivity with socioecological resilience. These agendas assume that “good grazing management” yields resilience benefits, but metrics at landscape and territorial scales remain scarce, and empirical evidence is limited. Monitoring at herd or soil levels is costly and slow, while survey-based approaches are subjective, leaving policy reliant on fragmented, speculative information.
This project addresses that gap. Building on global datasets from the ERC Resilient Rules project, covering rules-in-use and resilience assesments across pastoralist communities worldwide, REGRASS investigates how grazing rules leave detectable “footprints” on landscapes, and when these align or diverge from local perceptions of environmental change. It combines institutional analysis, remote sensing, and explainable AI to build a transparent, semi-automated framework for assessing governance impacts on resilience.
REGRASS delivers:
(i) empirical evidence on when institutions shape ecological outcomes;
(ii) theoretical insights into how governance, perception, and landscape resilience interact; and
(iii) a transferable toolkit integrating institutions, satellite monitoring, and interpretable AI.
By embedding technological advances within governance-aware frameworks, REGRASS generates policy-ready tools and generalisable insights into common-pool resource management, directly supporting EU priorities in sustainable agriculture, biodiversity, and digital transformation.
