Objective
Spin Hall nano-oscillators (SHNOs) have attracted considerable interest owing to their nanoscale dimensions, high operating frequencies, ultra-fast and wide frequency tunability, and potential as CMOS alternatives. Their operation relies on spin–orbit torque (SOT), which has been extensively explored in heavy metals. In contrast, Kagome materials host unique topological quantum features, such as 2D flat bands and Dirac-like surface states, offering a promising platform to study unconventional SOT phenomena. These properties are predicted to generate large, unconventional torques and enable voltage tunability, paving the way for energy-efficient, field-free SOT applications. Building on this potential, the KaSHNO project—Kagome-based Spin Hall Nano-Oscillators—seeks to harness Kagome materials for the realization of energy-efficient, field-free spintronic nano-oscillators.
The first objective of KaSHNO is the growth of Kagome materials as efficient spin-current sources. Subsequently, device fabrication will enable the quantification of SOT using spin torque ferromagnetic resonance (STFMR) and 2nd harmonis Hall volatge (HHV) techniques, with an emphasis on disentangling the origin of the torques. The next stage focuses on fabricating SHNO devices and probing their oscillatory behavior both electrically and optically (via Brillouin light scattering). Mutual synchronization and field-free auto-oscillations will then be explored. Finally, voltage gating will be employed to achieve scalable, energy-efficient auto-oscillations for applications in neuromorphic computing and microwave technologies.
