Objective
The MoS2-ZIBNext project tackles a critical challenge in Europe’s energy transition: the development of sustainable, safe, and scalable energy storage beyond lithium-ion batteries. Aqueous zinc-ion batteries (ZIBs) offer intrinsic safety, low cost, and use of abundant resources, but their adoption is hindered by poor cathode performance. This fellowship pioneers an innovative ethylenediamine (EDA)-functionalized MoS2/rGO nanocomposite, integrating interlayer expansion, 1T-phase stabilization, and carbon hybridization within a green and scalable synthesis framework. Comprehensive structural and chemical characterization (XRD, Raman, XPS, TEM) will establish quantitative structure–property relationships, while advanced electrochemical diagnostics (GCD, CV, EIS, GITT, dQ/dV) will evaluate long-term ZIB cycling stability and degradation mechanisms. Multifunctionality will be validated through performance benchmarking in supercapacitors. Interdisciplinary secondments at the Czech Academy of Sciences and the University of Twente will expand expertise in surface analysis, diagnostics, and modeling, reinforcing cross-European collaboration. Results will be disseminated via open-access publications, FAIR-compliant datasets, and stakeholder engagement, contributing to Battery 2030+, BATT4EU, and the EU Green Deal. MoS2-ZIBNext will deliver new knowledge, scalable cathode solutions, and cross-platform insights that advance Europe’s leadership in sustainable energy storage, while fostering the fellow’s path toward independent scientific leadership.

Net EU financial contribution. The sum of money that the participant receives, deducted by the EU contribution to its linked third party. It considers the distribution of the EU financial contribution between direct beneficiaries of the project and other types of participants, like third-party participants.
