Mobilizing Participatory Commons & Commoning to Safeguard Intangible Cultural Heritage, Enhance Societal Resilience and Drive Agroecological Transitions

Objective

Rural landscapes across Europe are vital reservoirs of intangible cultural heritage (ICH)—including traditional ecological knowledge, seasonal rituals, and oral traditions—that have long supported biodiversity, climate resilience, food security, and cultural identity. These socio‑ecological systems, already weakened by demographic decline, economic restructuring, and loss of intergenerational knowledge, now face mounting pressures from climate change, land abandonment, and changing land‑use patterns. Our project adopts a multi‑layered approach to ICH‑linked rural commons, treating them as engines of agroecological transition and living infrastructures of biocultural heritage, upheld through collective governance, stewardship, and participation. Integrating commons and agroecology as sciences, practices, and social movements, we promote sustainable food systems, local self‑determination, and social justice. In ten Cultural Commons Labs (CCLs) across Ireland, Germany, Italy, Hungary, Romania, Greece, Turkey, and Cyprus—spanning coastal mosaics, alpine meadows, terraced vineyards, olive groves, high‑nature‑value grasslands, and agro‑industrial areas—we co‑design governance models, revitalise ICH, and adapt agroecological practices for resilience. A key innovation expands FAO’s TAPE framework with ICH‑specific indicators, linking cultural vitality to ecosystem health, livelihoods, and governance. Through participatory monitoring, scenario‑building, and co‑created outputs on open stewardship platforms, we foster replication, cross‑regional learning, and stakeholder empowerment. Outcomes are embedded in multi‑level governance via Participatory Heritage Assemblies and Biocultural Heritage Landscape Observatories, aligning local innovations with CAP reform, the European Green Deal, the SDGs, and the European Landscape Convention.
