Climate Change Impact on Marine Diversity: Phytoplankton adaptation to resource variability

Objective

Climate change is reshaping the ocean environment for phytoplankton by altering resource availability through intensified stratification and increased climatic variability and extremes. These changes threaten phytoplankton diversity, which plays a vital role in sustaining ecosystem functions and services. However, the links between climate-driven environmental changes and phytoplankton diversity remain poorly understood. CliMaDiv will generate critical new knowledge by linking resource variability patterns with temporal strategies of phytoplankton and assessing how phytoplankton communities are impacted by climate change. Using the ECCO-Darwin global ocean modeling framework, NASA’s PACE hyperspectral observations, and the uniquely rich time series of the HCMR Poseidon observatory, CliMaDiv will pursue three research objectives: (RO1) assess the impacts of climate-change-induced resource variability on marine phytoplankton diversity (1992–present); (RO2) map the global biogeography of phytoplankton temporal strategies and ecosystem responses; and (RO3) integrate modeling and in-situ observations to elucidate the mechanistic links between resource variability and biodiversity of phytoplankton. To maximize impact beyond the scientific community, the CliMaDiv Outlook platform will communicate results to European policy and research programs, stakeholders, and the public, supporting informed decision-making and broader societal awareness.

Fields of science (EuroSciVoc)

CORDIS classifies projects with EuroSciVoc, a multilingual taxonomy of fields of science, through a semi-automatic process based on NLP techniques. See: The European Science Vocabulary.

Keywords

Project’s keywords as indicated by the project coordinator. Not to be confused with the EuroSciVoc taxonomy (Fields of science)

Programme(s)

Multi-annual funding programmes that define the EU’s priorities for research and innovation.

Topic(s)

Calls for proposals are divided into topics. A topic defines a specific subject or area for which applicants can submit proposals. The description of a topic comprises its specific scope and the expected impact of the funded project.

Funding Scheme

Funding scheme (or “Type of Action”) inside a programme with common features. It specifies: the scope of what is funded; the reimbursement rate; specific evaluation criteria to qualify for funding; and the use of simplified forms of costs like lump sums.

Call for proposal

Procedure for inviting applicants to submit project proposals, with the aim of receiving EU funding.

Net EU contribution

Net EU financial contribution. The sum of money that the participant receives, deducted by the EU contribution to its linked third party. It considers the distribution of the EU financial contribution between direct beneficiaries of the project and other types of participants, like third-party participants.
