Objective
The overall aim of the QUASAN project is to investigate how and how well quantum sensors can be integrated into an aircraft and what impact this has on the aircraft's navigational performance and the air transport system as a whole.
All modern concepts and methods in ATM and flight guidance are based on the reliable determination of the motion state estimation of the involved aircraft and the meteorological conditions around. Most important sensors involved are inertial sensors like accelerometers, gyroscopes, magnetometers and environmental sensors for airdata measurements like pressure transducers, temperature and humidity sensors. Inertial sensors are typically combined in integrated inertial navigation systems aided by GNSS, making the system vulnerable to RFI while airdata measurements are prone to environmental impact like icing. To overcome these issues and raise the performance of these classical systems, emerging quantum sensors have the potential to cover this gap, achieving high accuracy in autonomous positioning and increase resilience of trajectory based operations.
Quantum sensors represent a new generation of measuring instruments that utilise microscopic atomic magnets or matter waves to detect extremely weak magnetic fields or accelerations with unprecedented sensitivity. They are based on the utilisation of fundamental quantum phenomena such as superposition and entanglement for precise measurements. In contrast to classical sensors, which operate on discrete states, quantum sensors enable capabilities that go beyond the limits of conventional systems. The interaction of quantum states with external physical properties such as motion, magnetic field and gravity forms the fundamental mode of operation of quantum sensor technology.
QUASAN will asses the different Quantum sensor types for navigation in aviation and the impact and roadmap for incremental ATM integration as described in the work plan.

Net EU financial contribution. The sum of money that the participant receives, deducted by the EU contribution to its linked third party. It considers the distribution of the EU financial contribution between direct beneficiaries of the project and other types of participants, like third-party participants.
