SUPPORTING THE MENTAL HEALTH OF YOUTH IN EDUCATION, TRAINING AND WORK

Objective

The SUPPORT-Y project addresses the urgent need for mental health promotion among youth in education, training, and employment settings. Responding to the “prevention” and “quality” gaps identified in earlier studies, the project focuses on primary prevention by equipping young people with the knowledge and skills to support their own and shared mental well-being. Guided by inclusive society principles, the interventions target diverse youth populations, including those at risk due to socio-economic status, disabilities, migration background, or gender-based vulnerabilities.
The project will co-create, pilot, and scale two interventions—a blended model (webapp + peer support) and an adapted in-person model—through collaboration with over 250 stakeholders across eight European countries. These interventions will be tested in schools, vocational institutions, and workplaces to ensure feasibility, accessibility, and cultural relevance. A discrete choice experiment will assess willingness to pay and stakeholder preferences, supporting evidence-based decision-making.
By addressing gaps in current research and practice—such as limited inclusion of vulnerable youth, lack of disaggregated data, and underutilization of blended approaches—the project contributes to long-term mental health outcomes and social resilience. SUPPORT-Y contributes to the work programme by promoting mental health literacy, reducing stigma, and enhancing social inclusion. It generates scalable, replicable interventions and tools to support evidence-based decision making to embed mental health promotion in school, training and workplace practices. SUPPORT-Y aligns with EU and global priorities (WHO, UNESCO, UNICEF) on youth well-being, social sustainability, and resilience, and supports SDG 3 by advancing inclusive, preventative mental health strategies across Europe.

Programme(s)

Multi-annual funding programmes that define the EU’s priorities for research and innovation.

Topic(s)

Calls for proposals are divided into topics. A topic defines a specific subject or area for which applicants can submit proposals. The description of a topic comprises its specific scope and the expected impact of the funded project.

Funding Scheme

Funding scheme (or “Type of Action”) inside a programme with common features. It specifies: the scope of what is funded; the reimbursement rate; specific evaluation criteria to qualify for funding; and the use of simplified forms of costs like lump sums.
