Objective
The polycrisis of biodiversity loss and climate change demands not only science, but also societal trust, shared understanding and engagement. Across Europe, perceptions of biodiversity are fragmented and increasingly polarised, shaped by diverse values and debates over nature restoration. BIOLOGUE supports the EU Biodiversity Strategy for 2030, the Nature Restoration Regulation, and the Kunming–Montréal Global Biodiversity Framework by providing evidence and tools that help policymakers to navigate differences and build lasting solutions.
Guided by a novel Biodiversity Perceptions Framework, we will conduct an EU-wide representative survey (N=10.000) and stakeholders surveys, as well as AI-driven analysis of online texts and images to identify actor constellations, value conflicts, and opportunities for constructive dialogue and cooperation. These feed into 30 Inspirational Cases and 6 in-depth Communication Pilots that co-design, test and evaluate innovative offline and online communication for information sharing, deliberation, and co-creation. Core of BIOLOGUE’s approach is the Dialogue Co-Lab that functions as Science-Policy-Society-Media Interface anchored in existing nature restoration networks and linked to EU platforms such as BioAgora and the KCBD, mobilizing competent authorities, stakeholders, and media through dialogues, workshops, and training.
By the end of the project, policymakers will gain deeper insights into societal views on biodiversity and practical communication tools for inclusive decision-making. Society will gain improved understanding of the biodiversity crisis, empowering diverse groups, including women, youth, and marginalised communities, to co-create solutions.
BIOLOGUE’s legacy includes the first European Biodiversity Perceptions Barometer for long-term monitoring and a Biodiversity Communication Toolbox with fit-for-purpose offline and online communication approaches for policymakers and experts across all levels of governance.
