Exploring Europe’s cultural life in the digital age
The EU-funded LIL-ECHOES project will explore how extended reality (XR) and AI are transforming the ways people experience, create and share culture across contemporary Europe. It will combine ethnographic research, participatory co-design and mixed method studies to examine impacts on cultural identities, social relations and well-being. Experimental XR environments and conversational AI agents will support dialogue and intercultural communication, while an open-access multimodal corpus will document interactions. Collaboration between researchers, cultural institutions, artists, civil society and policymakers will help develop ethical, human-centred approaches to digital culture. The project will also provide evidence, design principles and policy recommendations to promote inclusive cultural participation, intercultural understanding and social cohesion, and to safeguard Europe’s cultural and linguistic diversity.
Objective
LIL-ECHOES will investigate how the virtualisation of culture and cultural life through Extended Reality (XR) and Artificial intelligence (AI) is transforming the ways people experience, perform and transmit culture in contemporary Europe. The project’s main objectives are:
(1) to understand how immersive technologies reshape cultural identities, social relations, and wellbeing;
(2) to co-create inclusive and sustainable models for digitally mediated cultural participation;
(3) to develop ethical, human-centric design frameworks for XR/AI cultural environments that foster intercultural understanding and social cohesion.
These objectives will be achieved through a network of Living Cultural Labs (LiLs) embedded in public cultural spaces across diverse European contexts. The LiLs will combine ethnographic fieldwork, participatory co-design, and longitudinal mixed-method research on how communities create, share, and reinterpret culture and communication using immersive technologies. The project will develop experimental XR environments and conversational AI agents to support dialogue and reflective practice. A multimodal open-access corpus will document these interactions. Cross-sectoral collaboration between researchers, artists, cultural institutions, civil society and policy actors will ensure knowledge transfer and sustainability.
LIL-ECHOES directly addresses the HORIZON-CL2-2025-01-HERITAGE-05 call by exploring the impacts of virtualisation on cultural life, advancing inclusive access to culture, and safeguarding European cultural and linguistic diversity in the digital age. It will generate evidence, design principles and policy recommendations to ensure that cultural digitalisation strengthens, rather than fragments, Europe’s social and cultural fabric.
