Building the global infrastructure for demographic studies
Declining and ageing populations are among the major demographic shifts shaping societies worldwide. Yet the data needed to study these changes and their impacts remain scattered and difficult to compare across countries. In this context, the EU-funded GGP-ACE project will support the transformation of the Generations and Gender Programme (GGP), a major international panel survey on families, life course trajectories and gender relations, into a sustainable European Research Infrastructure Consortium (ERIC). It will strengthen the infrastructure needed to continue delivering reliable and comparable demographic data on family processes, fertility, ageing, migration and intergenerational relations, enabling more robust research and better-informed policy decisions.
Objective
Demographic change poses major societal and policy challenges, yet reliable and comparable data to study its causes and consequences remain scarce and fragmented. The Generations and Gender Programme (GGP) provides unique longitudinal and cross-national survey data on family dynamics, fertility, ageing, intergenerational relations, and migration. Building on its success in more than 30 countries worldwide, the EU-funded GGP-ACE project will advance the transition of GGP into a permanent European Research Infrastructure Consortium (GGP-ERIC), supported by at least eight founding members. The project will activate an operation-ready Central Hub, and implement the governance, legal, and financial frameworks necessary for long-term sustainability. It will also consolidate methodological and technical standards, strengthen interoperability with other European research infrastructures, and expand membership and partnerships globally. By doing so, GGP-ACE will ensure that GGP becomes the leading infrastructure for high-quality, cross-national demographic and family research, providing open and FAIR data to researchers, policymakers, and societal stakeholders in Europe and beyond.
