Objective
MELANGE aims to transform colouration practices in the textile industry by shifting key design decisions to the start of the supply chain. To ensure sustainable competitiveness within the European design community, MELANGE advances low-impact fibre-stage colouration technologies and promotes circular approaches to colour design informed by heritage wool recycling in the Prato district. By positioning fibre-stage colouration as an alternative to conventional, resource-heavy colouration finishes, MELANGE advocates a paradigm shift in design practice, business decision-making and ecosystems, and policy within the interior textiles sector leading to significant impact. This shift to upstream, low-impact colouration can reduce water and chemical use by up to 50% compared with finishing-stage processes but requires overcoming barriers to change, such as establishing B2B acceptance of aesthetic colour non-replicability in commercial contexts. We propose system-level changes across design, decision-making, business ecosystems and policy in the interior textiles sector. We will develop the MELANGE framework to equip designers and industry decision-makers with a comprehensive set of guidelines for design, aesthetics, production, and business models. These guidelines–a valuable resource for designers and industry decision-makers–will help transition from harmful practices. MELANGE will generate research-based knowledge and actionable recommendations for policymakers to align legislation with circular and environmentally responsible textile systems. By integrating textile thinking and textile knowledge, MELANGE adopts a holistic, cross-disciplinary, and cross-sectoral perspective. Focusing on interventions at the start of the value chain, MELANGE aims to accelerate the adoption of environmentally responsible processes and an aesthetic paradigm capable of reshaping supply chains, marketing strategies, and policymaking in interior textiles and in other design-intensive sectors.
