Virtual Integration for Sustainable and Innovative Observation of Urban Air Quality

Objective

AMBITION: VISIONAIR aims to transform urban air quality management by developing integrated monitoring, modelling, and decision-support tools combining advanced technologies with citizen participation. It addresses the urgent need for real-time, high-resolution air pollution data linked to health and socio-economic impacts, enabling evidence-based policymaking and accelerating the EU Zero Pollution Action Plan and revised Ambient Air Quality Directive (AAQD). OUTCOMES: The project will deliver: (i) A calibrated, multi-sensor monitoring network integrating satellite, in-situ, drone, and citizen-generated data; (ii) AI-powered models for pollutant source attribution, forecasting, and exposure analysis; (iii) Urban Digital Twins and a Health Impact Toolkit for interactive visualization, scenario testing, and mitigation planning; (iv) Replication roadmaps and best-practice guidelines for wider European adoption. METHODOLOGY: Co-created with municipalities, citizens, and policymakers (WP1), VISIONAIR integrates advanced monitoring technologies (low-cost sensors, remote sensing, drones, citizen science, laboratory analytics) harmonized into interoperable data platforms (WP2) as well as AI and machine learning models for real-time mapping, source apportionment, and health impact assessment (WP3). Urban demo case studies in four European cities will be performed deploying digital twins and decision-support systems for operational validation (WP4). IMPACT: Communication, dissemination and exploitation in the short and long term (WP5) will ensure implementation of innovative governance models for decision-making processes, societal engagement and innovation for environmental monitoring.
