Objective
Europe’s livestock sector is heavily dependent on imported protein feeds, undermining the sustainability of the EU agri-food system while contributing to global climate change and biodiversity loss. The PROCEED project (Plant pROtein for agriCultural rEsilience and fEeD self-sufficiency) addresses this by designing cropping systems that optimise sustainable and profitable production of locally sourced protein crops across the EU. These systems stabilise yields, improve soil functions and biodiversity, enable on-farm processing, reduce import dependency, and strengthen the socio-economic resilience of rural communities.
PROCEED unites 20 partners from 12 countries - universities, research institutes, SMEs, and NGOs—through 11 national Practice Hubs (PHs) acting as innovation centres for regional protein crop production and use. Each PH integrates at least one Pilot Study (PS; 15 in total, including long-term protein-crop rotations), a Participatory Protein Producers and Processors (PPP) group, and a network of feed supply chain actors: crop and livestock producers, processors, equipment manufacturers, and feed producers. These communities co-develop solutions tailored to local socio-economic and pedoclimatic contexts, delivering integrated innovations.
Progress is valorised through on-farm feed production, processing, and formulation, with performance assessed via ecosystem service indicators and advanced modelling. Results feed into life cycle assessment (LCA), land-use risk analysis, and economic modelling from field to global levels. The hub-and-satellite model enables a cascade of Roadmaps for sustainable protein crop production: regional and national pathways converging into an EU-wide roadmap, ensuring scalability and long-term relevance.
As such, PROCEED implements robust mechanisms to identify market opportunities, trade dynamics, and policy needs – empowering resilient, sustainable, and profitable protein crop-based communities across Europe.
