TOWARDS THE ELIMINATION OF ACUTE LYMPHOBLASTIC LEUKAEMIA IN CHILDREN THROUGH IDENTIFICATION OF THEIR ENVIRONMENTAL CAUSES

Objective

At present, across EU countries, 30-50 per 1 million children develop acute lymphoblastic leukaemia (ALL) every year, making it the most frequent cancer in children. The overarching objective of ELI-ALL (Towards the elimination of ALL in children) project is to ultimately establish the potential relationship between environmental exposures and the risk of developing ALL during childhood, utilizing established and enhancing scientific insights into molecular mechanisms. The ambition is to, from this newly established scientific evidence base, develop and implement primary prevention so that fewer children in Europe and around the globe develop the commonest cancer in children.
ELI-ALL will investigate the link between maternal exposure during pregnancy or early childhood exposure to air pollution, per-and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) and pesticide and risk of preleukaemic clones and ALL.
ELI-ALL combines i) the world’s largest and longest-running cohorts of newborns with already collected maternal biological samples (blood and urine) to directly investigate the link between various environmental chemicals and the presence of preleukaemic clones in newborns ii) prospective cohort or nested registry-based studies with modelled environmental exposure data of several physical agents, including large numbers of registered ALL patients; iii) epigenetic trajectory studies based on the same cohorts of newborns to identify the epigenetic drivers, their potential reversibility and their relation to environmental exposures across the trajectory of ALL from birth to diagnosis and prognosis; iv) comparative empirical bioethics approach situated at the interface of bioethics, sociology, and law/social policy to investigate the practical-ethical questions related to environmental, genetic and epigenetic, omics and other factors influencing the onset and development of cancers in children, and define standards of good ethical practice and communication; v) a scientific consensus-based evaluation on the carcinogenicity of selected PFAS compound through a Monograph evaluation.
This action is part of the Cancer Mission cluster of projects on ‘Understanding(environmental exposure in CAYA).
