Fighting Everyday Misogyny in Visual Online Cultures

Objective

FEMVision – Fighting Everyday Misogyny in Visual Online Cultures addresses online misogyny through its visual dimension, focusing on mainstream digital environments frequented by young Europeans (18–30).

Unlike approaches centred on extremist niches, FEMVision investigates algorithmic feeds, semi-private and private conversations on platforms where misogynistic content circulates in subtle, ironic, or aestheticised forms, normalising gender inequality and hostility.

The project combines AI-driven methods based on Large Language Models with digital ethnography and qualitative research to capture not only the content but also the contexts, practices, and interpretations shaping its social meaning. Its main outputs are guidelines for policy makers and an innovative educational toolkit, including FEMIA – an AI conversational companion – along with visual-based learning activities and a card game to foster critical visual literacy.

Through cross-national surveys, data donation, ethnographic observation, and photo-elicitation interviews, FEMVision reconstructs how young people encounter, negotiate, or resist visual misogyny. The toolkit will be co-designed, tested and distributed through international workshops, webinars and training sessions with educators, youth workers and students. The project addresses the urgency of countering misogyny as a “gateway” to radicalisation, polarisation, and hate speech, while reinforcing democratic resilience and promoting inclusive digital spaces for women, girls, and gender-diverse individuals. In doing so, FEMVision bridges technological innovation and critical reflection, turning AI into a resource that empowers educators, youth workers, policymakers, and civil society to prevent a pervasive form of digital hate.

The consortium brings together leading universities and organisations from Italy, Denmark, Estonia, Sweden, Germany, Slovenia, and the Netherlands, ensuring a strong interdisciplinary and cross-cultural approach.
