Strengthening AU–EU R&I Partnerships: Mission-Oriented AKIS for FNSSA

Objective

AKIS4FNSSA seeks to transform the fragmented experiences in African AKIS with its AU-EU relations into a legitimate, sustainable, and mission-driven AKIS infrastructure. In doing so, it will foster systemic change in innovation and agrifood systems toward agroecology and climate resilience, and will impact interactions between science, society and policy on (bi-)continental R&I agendas.

The project’s objective is to assess and empower the joint AU–EU Agricultural Knowledge and Innovation System through the AKIS Nexus, an inclusive, multi-actor, and multi-level engagement platform. This platform is designed to strengthen climate-resilient farming and accelerate agroecological transitions in food systems in both Africa and the EU.

To achieve these ambitions, AKIS4FNSSA will achieve its envisaged outcomes and impact by understanding and mobilizing AKIS actors and networks at different levels in processes of co-creation, enhancing human and institutional capital, and piloting new solutions and governance structures.

The envisaged impact is to strengthen the AU–EU agrifood systems R&I governance framework by evolving the IRC into an enduring infrastructure and a community of practice that that drives agricultural innovation in Africa. AKIS4FNSSA is a shared African and European knowledge investment into a productive, innovative-driven and inclusive agricultural innovation system supporting the FNSSA Partnership.
