Objective
Water scarcity is tightening across Europe, yet infrastructures for reclaimed, grey, desalinated and rain waters remain under-used due to technical, regulatory, economic and social barriers. Circular4Farm closes this gap by demonstrating and scaling safe circular-water management in six pilots (Spain, Italy, Netherlands, Cyprus, Latvia, France) spanning open-field, greenhouse, hydroponic and community schemes.
The overall objective is to remove the barriers to large-scale circular-water use in EU agriculture. The specific objectives are to: (1) showcase and validate strategies in six contexts; (2) advance and validate an integrated microbiological–chemical risk-assessment and rating framework aligned with Reg. (EU) 2020/741 and Codex “fit-for-purpose”; (3) deliver cost-effective monitoring (incl. ML-based virtual sensors), modular treatments (e.g. biochar) and a DSS for crop-water needs; (4) foster social acceptance throughout collaborative learning environment; and (5) foster wider uptake via replication clusters and AKIS/CAP channels, underpinned by policy briefs.
Pilots act as living laboratories with harmonised SOPs and multi-season monitoring across the water–soil–crop–product pathway; experimental and observational evidence validates the rating framework and defines compliance envelopes and CAPEX/OPEX for uptake.
Circular4Farm directly addresses the purpose of the call, providing multi-season evidence on safe pathways for alternative water in agriculture, farmer-acceptance measures and robust routes to upscaling throughout skill development and mindset shift, while contributing to the Green Deal, Farm to Fork, the UWWTD recast (EU) 2024/3019 and the EU Water Resilience Strategy.
Expected results include validated protocols for >20 water–crop combinations, an EU-usable risk-rating scale, monitoring/treatment solutions, replication toolkits and policy recommendations—cutting freshwater abstraction, boosting drought resilience and enhancing consumer trust.
