Circular systemic solutions for regenerative agriculture, local food systems, and reusable packaging in cities and regions

Objective

CIRCULANDIA aims to demonstrate, deploy, and upscale circular systemic solutions for food, nutrients, and packaging in European cities and regions, directly supporting the European Green Deal and Circular Cities and Regions Initiative (CCRI). CIRCULANDIA aims to create a circular and resilient urban–rural ecosystem that mitigates climate change by integrating three interlinked value chains: regenerative agriculture, local food production and distribution, and reusable takeaway packaging. By combining these, CIRCULANDIA disrupts linear models of resource extraction, consumption, and waste, and delivers measurable reductions in greenhouse gas emissions, improved air quality, and enhanced biodiversity.

Regenerative agriculture restores soil health and increases carbon sequestration, whilst nutrients from different local bio-based side streams and residues are returned back to the soil. Powering local food production and consumption through public procurement and governance, CIRCULANDIA aims to shorten supply chains, strengthen producer-consumer connections, and enable elimination of unnecessary packaging, reducing both waste and transport emissions. For contexts where packaging remains essential, such as takeaway food, CIRCULANDIA shifts from single-use to reusable systems, ensuring packaging circulate multiple times.

The project brings together public authorities, businesses, industry, clusters, research organizations, and NGOs to co-create and implement innovative circular business and governance models, and stimulating social innovation. Demonstrations and replications are tailored to local socio-economic and environmental needs. Robust monitoring, knowledge transfer, and strategic collaboration with CIRCULANDIA multipliers as well as the CCRI ensure widespread replication, scalability, and visibility of solutions. CIRCULANDIA delivers economic, social, and environmental benefits, accelerating Europe’s transition to circular, climate-neutral cities and regions.

Fields of science (EuroSciVoc)

CORDIS classifies projects with EuroSciVoc, a multilingual taxonomy of fields of science, through a semi-automatic process based on NLP techniques. See: The European Science Vocabulary.

Keywords

Project’s keywords as indicated by the project coordinator. Not to be confused with the EuroSciVoc taxonomy (Fields of science)

Programme(s)

Multi-annual funding programmes that define the EU’s priorities for research and innovation.

Topic(s)

Calls for proposals are divided into topics. A topic defines a specific subject or area for which applicants can submit proposals. The description of a topic comprises its specific scope and the expected impact of the funded project.

Funding Scheme

Funding scheme (or “Type of Action”) inside a programme with common features. It specifies: the scope of what is funded; the reimbursement rate; specific evaluation criteria to qualify for funding; and the use of simplified forms of costs like lump sums.
