Extending European Infrastructures into the Arctic Ocean.

Objective

HiAOOS-TECH aims to advance Arctic Ocean observation by developing autonomous platforms for sustained data collection in ice-covered regions. Building on results of HiAOOS (2023–2027), the project addresses critical gaps in physical, biogeochemical, and geophysical data by enhancing platforms such as Argo floats, AUVs, Ocean Bottom Seismometers (OBS), and acoustic networks.
The project will develop a network of acoustic transceiver nodes that enable under-ice positioning, navigation, and communication for mobile platforms. Argo floats will be equipped with acoustic receivers and advanced ice sensing algorithms to operate beneath sea ice. A cross-platform biogeochemical sensor package will be develop and optimized for Argo floats and AUVs. Long-range AUVs will collect biogeochemical data while navigating under-ice using acoustic signals from the acoustic nodes. Furthermore, the AUVs will harvest data from seafloor installations, including OBS units capable of long-term deployment, remote data retrieval and recovery in ice-covered regions. A novel winch system will provide high-bandwidth data transmission through the water column - from seabed to surface and onward via satellite. Two major Arctic field campaigns will validate technologies under real conditions.
HiAOOS-TECH is co-created with European research infrastructures and industry partners, ensuring alignment with strategic roadmaps and fostering innovation. The project will follow Open Science practices, involve stakeholders, to ensure broad impact. HiAOOS-TECH will deliver a resilient, interoperable observing system, enabling Europe to lead in autonomous Arctic research and support global initiatives like the UN Ocean Decade and International Polar Year 2032–2033. The project supports EU priorities in climate resilience, digital transformation, and technological sovereignty, contributing to Horizon Europe’s INFRATECH goals.

Fields of science (EuroSciVoc)

CORDIS classifies projects with EuroSciVoc, a multilingual taxonomy of fields of science, through a semi-automatic process based on NLP techniques. See: The European Science Vocabulary.

Keywords

Project’s keywords as indicated by the project coordinator. Not to be confused with the EuroSciVoc taxonomy (Fields of science)

Programme(s)

Multi-annual funding programmes that define the EU’s priorities for research and innovation.

Topic(s)

Calls for proposals are divided into topics. A topic defines a specific subject or area for which applicants can submit proposals. The description of a topic comprises its specific scope and the expected impact of the funded project.

Funding Scheme

Funding scheme (or “Type of Action”) inside a programme with common features. It specifies: the scope of what is funded; the reimbursement rate; specific evaluation criteria to qualify for funding; and the use of simplified forms of costs like lump sums.

Net EU contribution

Net EU financial contribution. The sum of money that the participant receives, deducted by the EU contribution to its linked third party. It considers the distribution of the EU financial contribution between direct beneficiaries of the project and other types of participants, like third-party participants.
