An AI Agent to Support Environmental Intelligence by Interacting with Copernicus Earth Observation Data

Objective

With the unprecedented advances in the satellite technology, recent years have led to a significant increase in the volume of Earth observation (EO) data archives. In particular, through the Copernicus programme, which is the European flagship satellite initiative in EO, Sentinel satellites acquire a volume of roughly 20TB satellite images per day and the total size of the Copernicus data archives is almost a volume of 40PB. Thus, there has been a growing need for accurate and scalable techniques for querying, searching and retrieving EO data from Copernicus archives. In the ERC StG BigEarth project, we developed cutting-edge methods to address this problem, providing the foundations of accurate and scalable knowledge discovery systems for EO data archives. In the proof of concept Agent BigEarth project, we aim at exploring pathways from the methods developed in the ERC StG BigEarth project towards innovation, delivering a TRL 6. Agent-BigEarth will be an AI-powered digital assistant that: 1) will facilitate seamless interaction with Copernicus data; 2) will effectively guide users in finding the data that they seek from the Copernicus archives; 3) will answer the questions of the users about the complex content of the Copernicus data of their interest. Agent-BigEarth will ease the exploitation of Copernicus data for expert as well as non-expert users (e.g. journalists who want to find the latest satellite image covering an area affected by an environmental disaster), contributing to advance AI-enabled environmental intelligence. Agent-BigEarth will go beyond the existing online keywords/tags-based search tools, and its innovations will be transformative for Copernicus EO data access and analysis. During the project it will be validated with users, aligned with Copernicus Entrusted Entities and disseminated across European and global communities.

Programme(s)

Multi-annual funding programmes that define the EU’s priorities for research and innovation.

Topic(s)

Calls for proposals are divided into topics. A topic defines a specific subject or area for which applicants can submit proposals. The description of a topic comprises its specific scope and the expected impact of the funded project.

Funding Scheme

Funding scheme (or “Type of Action”) inside a programme with common features. It specifies: the scope of what is funded; the reimbursement rate; specific evaluation criteria to qualify for funding; and the use of simplified forms of costs like lump sums.
