Near Infrared Perovskite Light Emitting Diodes Integrated into a Silicon Nitride Photonic Platform: Technologies Hybridization

Objective

IPER-TECH will demonstrate the integration of an array of efficient tin-based perovskites LEDs, with steerable emission in the NIR-I spectral range, into a photonic integrated platform based on silicon nitride. The latter is recognized as a key technology due to its compatibility with the complementary metal–oxide–semiconductor (CMOS) manufacturing infrastructure and the potential for integration with back-end-of-line Si microelectronics. Integrated optical platforms are an essential development for the implementation of complex functionalities that are becoming increasingly sophisticated in their applications.IPER-TECH will demonstrate the integration of an array of efficient tin-based perovskites LEDs, with steerable emission in the NIR-I spectral range, into a photonic integrated platform based on silicon nitride, which is recognized as a key technology due to its compatibility with the complementary metal–oxide–semiconductor (CMOS) manufacturing infrastructure and the potential for integration with back-end-of-line Si microelectronics. Integrated optical platforms are an essential development for the implementation of complex functionalities that are becoming increasingly sophisticated in their applications. In this context, a big technological gap is present in the NIR spectral range, which cover nearly all aspects of our daily life. In fact, commercial NIR light emitting diodes (LEDs), which commonly employ epitaxial heterostructures of III–V inorganic semiconductors as emitting materials (e.g. GaAs, InGaAs, etc.), cannot be integrated.
The demonstration of a new hybrid technology for photonic applications will enable otherwise unachievable functionalities for diversified applications ranging from night vision to optical communications, data storage and biomedical treatments and lay the foundation of the first technology of light-emitting sources in the Near-Infrared (NIR) spectral range whose architecture can be customized and integrated in complex systems.

Programme(s)

Multi-annual funding programmes that define the EU’s priorities for research and innovation.

Topic(s)

Calls for proposals are divided into topics. A topic defines a specific subject or area for which applicants can submit proposals. The description of a topic comprises its specific scope and the expected impact of the funded project.

Funding Scheme

Funding scheme (or “Type of Action”) inside a programme with common features. It specifies: the scope of what is funded; the reimbursement rate; specific evaluation criteria to qualify for funding; and the use of simplified forms of costs like lump sums.

Call for proposal

Procedure for inviting applicants to submit project proposals, with the aim of receiving EU funding.

FONDAZIONE ISTITUTO ITALIANO DI TECNOLOGIA
Net EU contribution

Net EU financial contribution. The sum of money that the participant receives, deducted by the EU contribution to its linked third party. It considers the distribution of the EU financial contribution between direct beneficiaries of the project and other types of participants, like third-party participants.
