Robotics and AI-assisted Decision Support for Efficient and Sustainable Remanufacturing and Refurbishment in Electronics towards Circular Transformation

Objective

The shift towards a circular and low-carbon industrial economy requires production systems that can flexibly accommodate heterogeneous streams of end-of-life products and components. RESURRECTION addresses this challenge by developing a modular, interoperable, and human-centric framework for AI-driven remanufacturing. Building on advances in robotics, data analytics, and digital infrastructures, the project will enable efficient product diagnosis, robotic disassembly, decision-support for repair and reuse, and full lifecycle traceability, while embedding circular-by-design principles into product development.
At product level, RESURRECTION will introduce methods and software solutions for product state classification, design guidelines for remanufacturability, and Digital Product Passports ensuring transparent and secure information flows. At process level, digital infrastructures will be deployed to orchestrate flexible remanufacturing operations, supported by digital twins for simulation, monitoring, and optimisation, as well as traceability tools for supply network coordination. At resource level, advanced robotic modules and AI-based skill libraries will provide autonomous and adaptable capabilities for disassembly, inspection, and component recovery, enabling hybrid production environments that combine human expertise with robotic precision.
The project further emphasises workforce transformation through an educational platform and immersive training modules for upskilling and reskilling. Operators will be supported during remanufacturing tasks via inclusive human–machine interfaces, while structured learning pathways and certification schemes will enhance long-term employability.
RESURRECTION will be validated through four sectoral pilots covering high-impact applications: electric vehicle batteries, washing machines, industrial robots, and telecommunication devices (modems).

Keywords

Project’s keywords as indicated by the project coordinator. Not to be confused with the EuroSciVoc taxonomy (Fields of science)

Programme(s)

Multi-annual funding programmes that define the EU’s priorities for research and innovation.

Topic(s)

Calls for proposals are divided into topics. A topic defines a specific subject or area for which applicants can submit proposals. The description of a topic comprises its specific scope and the expected impact of the funded project.

Funding Scheme

Funding scheme (or “Type of Action”) inside a programme with common features. It specifies: the scope of what is funded; the reimbursement rate; specific evaluation criteria to qualify for funding; and the use of simplified forms of costs like lump sums.
